I recently discovered Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which is a whole new way of farming. Small independent farmers, who are usually organic or eco-friendly, sell shares of their produce to people in the community. These shareholders get weekly or bi-weekly deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables to locations near them. Each delivery contains produce just picked from the farm, with no harmful pesticides!
The CSA nearest to me in Pasadena, is the Tierra Miguel Foundation, that delivers to the California Institute of Technology campus (where I happen to work!). The Tierra Miguel Foundation offers weekly or bi-weekly subscriptions of produce all year for about $42 a shipment. If you aren't comfortable with getting a whole year like I was then you can pay per season, although you only get a slight discount if you pay for the whole year. One season of weekly or bi-weekly shipments is around $50 a shipment.
My boyfriend is a vegetarian and I only eat chicken and fish. Together we are always trying out new recipes that we can both enjoy. When I mentioned this CSA to him, he was excited to see what types of fruits and vegetables would be in the shipments each week. We decided that no matter what is in each shipment we are going to use everything!
I decided to start this blog to document what we get in each shipment and how we use each item to make a delicious (I hope) vegetarian meal. I hope you enjoy learning about CSA's with us!
